the article showed that the writer had been influenced by many people around her. that her ideas and thoughts was based on what she had seen, or those she had been through. she had so much about language to express to readers.
I was borned and grew up in China, clearly I am not a native English speaker. I was told by adults, teachers, that I have Language endowments, I speak very like native speakers, no matter what the language is. So I was quite proud of that. It was maybe that I felt too comfort and confident about my talent in Language, I found myself disapointed when I was 12. there was a school program which I attended and stayed in America for 10 months, Americans were nice, but I never felt that I speak the same as them, there are somehow a big difference between us and I felt myself like a stereotype book reader to them. So I began to stop talking, just like the childhood writer. Then there was Candace, a American borned Mexican girl, she noticed and tried to convince me that the purpose of foreign people speaking English is to get to know the American culture, as long as Americans can understand me; but if I ever stopped, I would never get any closer. there's no improvements unless I keep practice.
And this is the story that forced me to keep on practice in the last few years, although I still feel the distance, I am trying.

"without the word, there's no world."--Mikhail Bakhtin
I'd always believe that relationships between human relies on communication; Language is a tool which we use vey often to communicate with others. One may absorb knowledge from another, therefore sharing the same language has built up a bridge for them to learn and know. There are different types of language, conversations, writtings, body language, etc. We send out messages to others to let them know our feelings, thoughts, and opinions. Especially when there's a situation that one know something and others do not. For example, I know a lot about China and Ms. Howes may don't; when we are chatting about China, Ms. Howes may get to know China through my description, but only if I speak the language she knows. Think of one from Mars is giving a speech to us using Mars language, we won't be able to understand anything, there was a movie on this called . Hence language is what lead us to discover and know the world. Also, I agree with the text that language shapes our thinking. For instance, thousands of years ago, when human were still using the "Hieroglyphics," at that time, the written words can express its meaning dirextly because every word looks just like the corresponding object. That was convinient which helped to shape human's thinking on things they observed and felt, things that they had in mind.
Language plays an important role in how we perceive the world, it is a tool we use to communicate and also it helps to shape our thinking.
